Hello...Welcome to the Movement!
We are Jared + Jessica. Our journey in the maker world really began many years ago in 2013, when our first child was born.
Back to the Beginning...
Jessica had learned to knit and crochet in her teens, and picked up the hobby again during her first pregnancy and into maternity leave with their daughter. She began creating little crochet baby accessories, and with the encouragement of family and friends, started to sell them on Etsy. Things really took off when she shifted to primarily knitting baby and kids toques, and she quickly took the step to leave Etsy and create her own e-commerce website. Business was great and busy for many years, but the demands and stresses started to take their toll. What once was a fun hobby was now a job, and while there were SO many wonderful perks that came with doing something you love and the flexibility of working from home, a shift needed to happen.
This is where Jared comes in.
He had spend many years working hard to support their family in the construction business. While the work was good, his heart wasn't in it, and it started to take it's toll on his mental health. His evenings were spent making pom-poms for Jessica's busy knitwear business (he begrudgingly agreed to learn how to make them to help her out, as Jessica was very busy with orders). Out of desperation to build a new stream of income that would eventually allow him to leave the construction world, Jared ventured into selling his pom-poms to other makers.
And Warehouse 2020 was born.
Our initial intentions with Warehouse 2020 was for it to be a platform for Jared to sell his pom poms and faux fur fabrics, while Jessica would continue to focus on her knitwear. We wanted it to be a place to focus on maker-related content and products. It quickly evolved into a much larger online store for makers, including luxury yarns, notions, knitting needles, patterns, and so much more.
That side of our business is still alive and well, and so if you are ever in need of other yarns or maker supplies, we would LOVE for you to check it out!
The best part of this journey, BY FAR, has been the wonderful community of makers that we have come to know and love, and that have supported us over the years. Beyond just supplying makers with the materials needed for their craft, we have always strived to be a source of support and encouragement for makers, to grow and thrive in their hobby or business.
We also really started to notice how much value this maker community places on supporting local, small businesses. While we love some of the yarn brands that we carry, we noticed a gap in the market for a Canadian-owned luxury yarn brand.
Maker MVMT
And here we are. Maker MVMT was born from a love for this maker community. A love for movement - whether the physical movement of needles and yarn running through your hands, the movement of creativity, or the movement of people coming together in mutual love of a craft. We are here for the movement towards slow fashion, sustainably and naturally sourced fibres, slowing down and enjoying the process.
